Alia Simetra
For as long as he can remember, Alia Simetra has been fascinated by one of humanity's most powerful inventions: money.
As a child, he watched the world orbit around it. Conversations changed because of it. Relationships were shaped by it. Dreams were built upon it and, at times, destroyed by it. To the young mind of Simetra, money appeared almost mythical: a force capable of unlocking freedom, admiration, comfort, beauty, and possibility.
Yet beneath that fascination lived a question that never stopped echoing:
If money possesses such power, why does it not guarantee happiness?
That question became the foundation of his artistic universe.
Growing up surrounded by conflicting beliefs, Simetra witnessed the contradiction that defines modern existence. On one side stood abundance, luxury, status, and security. On the other stood sacrifice, obsession, struggle, and the invisible cost often paid to acquire them. He became captivated by the delicate line separating empowerment from illusion, fulfillment from desire, and wealth from meaning.
Rather than searching for answers through words, he chose to pursue them through art.
At the center of many of his works lives a recurring character: Baby Simetra.
Baby Simetra is not simply a figure. He is the artist's inner child preserved in time, the boy who first became mesmerized by the promises of money and everything it seemed capable of providing. He represents innocence before certainty, curiosity before conclusion, and the beginning of a lifelong investigation into value, ambition, identity, and human desire.
Appearing across multiple timelines and realities, Baby Simetra serves as a silent traveler through the artist's evolving consciousness. Sometimes he is an observer. Sometimes he is a dreamer. Sometimes he is lost within worlds constructed from symbols of luxury, power, and aspiration. Through him, the artist revisits the original questions that continue to shape his work today.
Simetra approaches each creation as a dialogue between eras. He collects materials from the present while drawing conceptual blueprints from both the past and imagined futures. His works move freely through time, blending memory, speculation, nostalgia, and contemporary culture into layered visual narratives that challenge the viewer to reconsider what truly holds value.
The questions remain unanswered.
And perhaps that is precisely the point.
For Simetra, art is not a destination but an ongoing exploration. Every piece becomes a fragment of a larger conversation about human nature, desire, success, and self-discovery.
Today, his perspective on money has evolved. What once appeared to be the ultimate source of happiness is now understood as something far more nuanced. He sees money not as the destination itself, but as a medium of expression, a tool that can amplify individuality, enable experiences, fulfill authentic desires, and reveal who we truly are.
Because in the end, wealth does not create identity.
It magnifies it.
And through his art, Alia Simetra continues to explore the timeless question that first emerged in the mind of a child:
What is truly valuable?

Alia Simetra at Zuma
In summer 2026, Zuma Mykonos opened its terraces to a one-night exhibition of new works — unveiled piece by piece against the stone walls as the sun went down over the Aegean.
